He just never really showed his true personality to the rest of his crewmates, until he found the fruit he was looking for; he said so himself during his battle with Ace. WebGarp doesn't need redemption. Ace, Luffy (and Sabo) know what being pirates mean and went agains Garps judgement. The war wasn't for Ace, Ace was the trigger. It was pirates (anarchy) vs marines (order). And all pirates, not just WB and the "good" ones. There's a reason all the world was rooting for the marines. These people fear pirates.
