When changing direction a segment is both more and less limited. For the direction the belt color does not matter. But a splitter can't simply be reversed. So a segment stops at a splitter. In Factorio I think you're meant to use trains to transfer materials over large distances, such as in the campaign where there is a mining outpost some distance away and you're meant to use a train to transfer the materials from the outpost to your main base.
