To baste a stitch, you place thread under the needle and stitch up to the point where you want the thread to be. WebBasting will require a long stitch. Using the longest stitch length of 5mm or up to 7mm on some machines is best because a bigger stitch is easier to remove. Top stitching and decorative stitches use a longer stitch of 2.5 – 3.5. This size depends on the fabric. Machine gathering uses a longer stitch at 4.0 – 5mm.
